Aly & AJ

78violet (formerly known as Aly & AJ) is an American pop rock band consisting of sisters Aly Michalka and AJ Michalka. They were born in Torrance, California, but spent part of their childhood in Seattle, Washington. They are both singer-songwriters, guitarists, and actors. They signed a record deal with Hollywood Records in 2004, but they left in 2010 due to creative reasons with the label and later signed with Violet House Records. They released their debut studio album Into the Rush on August 17, 2005. The album debuted at number thirty six in the United States, selling over 24,000 copies in its first week and was later certified Gold by the RIAA. Into the Rush earned them the "Contemporary Inspirational Artists of the Year" nomination at the 2006 American Music Awards. Into the Rush has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide as of 2012. In 2006, the duo released their second studio and first Holiday album Acoustic Hearts of Winter, which peaked at seventy-eight on the Billboard 200. Their third studio album Insomniatic debuted at number fifteen in the United States on the Billboard 200, selling over 39,000 copies in its first week and was later certified Gold by the RIAA making it their highest debut to date. The album's lead single "Potential Breakup Song" is their most successful single to date, it was certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales over 1,000,000 copies and managed to peak at number seventeen (#17) on Billboard becoming their first top twenty entry and international hit. Insomniatic has sold over 2 million copies worldwide as of 2012. On January 25, 2013, it was confirmed that the lead single from the new album would be "Hothouse". The duo has confirmed the single to be released July 8th of 2013.
