Thelonious Monk
Developing a music style in 1947 that remained unchanged for the next 25 years, Thelonious Monk was first criticized by observers due to his unusual technique on the piano, before being hailed as a genius ten years later. His compositions were so ahead of their time that lazier bebop players were convinced he was crazy. His name, appearance and personality did not help matters. His greatness was finally recognised at a gig at the Five Spot in 1957.
