Once upon a time in West Berlin, Horst Weidenmueller formed Studio !K7 with a mission to produce videos about the punk and independent artists of the mid-1980s. Among these were Nick Cave and Einstuerzende Neubauten. In 1996 A&R Stefan Strüver joined the company, and the label !K7 was launched, with a brief to develop the work of innovative electronic producers from the UK, Europe and the USA. It kicked off with signings such as Terrence Parker, Nicolette and Gez Varley, and has carried on fostering varied and unique talents such as Ursula Rucker, Shantel, Funkstorung, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca, Smith & Mighty, Herbert, Rae & Christian, A Guy Called Gerald and Terranova. Far from being a one dimensional dance label, the !K7 stable represents no one particular sound or style. Rather, it has always been fuelled by a relentless commitment to release the brightest, most interesting sounds from the digital leftfield. That mission continues.
